Lo shorthair domestico è richiesto dagli standard dello spettacolo per essere un gatto robusto con gambe ossute e una testa rotonda con occhi rotondi e orecchie arrotondate in punta. Il mantello deve essere corto e può essere di qualsiasi colore riconosciuto per il pelo lungo o persiano. Alcuni colori, come il blu crema, si trovano raramente nei capelli corti; altri, come i colori del tabby (argento, marrone, blu e rosso), sono più comuni. In Gran Bretagna, lo shorthair è chiamato shorthair britannico per distinguerlo dalle altre razze classificate come shorthair straniere.

Sebbene il vicolo, o comune, gatto possa assomigliare a un pelo corto di razza, non è un animale di razza; piuttosto, è una combinazione di razze e può differire notevolmente nella corporatura e nel mantello dal pelo corto di razza.
